Imperia is a city that was founded in 1923 by the union of two towns, Porto Maurizio and Oneglia, with other small towns in the hinterland, now all villages. Porto Maurizio was the lords of Clavesana and then by the Genoese in 1228, Oneglia Bishop of Albenga until the end of the thirteenth century, then the Doria of Genoa (Admiral Andrea Doria was born here in 1466) and then of Savoy from 1576. They were always different cities, not always able to understand each other. There was not even a bridge over the river that divides Empire, until the nineteenth century.
